As leaders, it’s our responsibility to create an environment where every team member has the opportunity to grow and thrive—beyond just promotions🚀
On October 31, I facilitated a webinar with The Diversity Movement, "Beyond Promotions: Building Equitable Career Opportunities for Every Employee." In this session, we dove into practical strategies for breaking down barriers to advancement, addressing challenges like promotion biases, unclear pathways, and the unique struggles faced by remote and underrepresented employees.

Bonus Q&A after the conversation:
How would you apply [career navigation strategies] to relatively flat organizations with 50 or fewer employees? Would anything about this process change for those types of organizations?
Josh - "Career navigation shouldn’t change at smaller organizations. If anything, it should be easier as there are likely less managers that are responsible for helping employees through career navigation. Smaller organizations may have a less robust process in place, so the leaders need to be more creative in providing advancement and development opportunities for their employees."
How do you tactfully press a manager into having real helpful dialogue?
Josh - "It can be difficult when managers are struggling to produce helpful dialogue. In some cases, you can almost dictate the questions to be discussed. As a CEO or HR leader you can send a set on 3-4 key questions that you want your managers to discuss with their employees, and even build these questions into the check in. It forces the manager to discuss these items since the employee has seen them and answered them in their check-in. Also, it can come down to better training and development for the managers to have the difficult conversations with their employees."
